Centres must ensure the efforts required from a candidate to complete the assessment do not present an unnecessary risk. Assessment Criteria 4.1a - Demonstrate efficient and safe movement principles when applying effort to support or move a person manually on their own. This assessment is about following the safe and correct principles of supporting or moving people without using equipment and on their own. Suitable surfaces to support the person to and from can include a chair, wheelchair or bed. • assist sitting to standing • assist standing to sitting • assist to walk • assist into bed – (no equipment) • assist out of bed - (no equipment). This assessment is about following the safe and correct principles of supporting or moving people using the appropriate equipment. This may be on their own or with another carer depending on the equipment used and the individual being moved. Equipment must be used safely and according to guidelines and instructions. Suitable equipment may include handling belts, transfer boards, slide sheets, wheelchairs, rota stands, passive or active hoists. Please note that some employers may view certain equipment to be ‘controversial’, for example handling belts, and so will not use them in their settings.
