Food Labelling Compliance

The Food Information Regulations affect prepacked foods food produced in the UK as well as Foods to be imported into the UK.

Examples of Food Businesses that need to comply are:

• Food Manufacturers
• Central Processing Units

Foods exported to the EU must include the name and address of the EU importer plus any products of animal origin as well as identity codes and the newly adopted premises health mark.

The Food Information Regulations are enforced by EHO’s and Trading Standard Officers alike, who have the power to seize food, take enforcement action on a food business owner which can lead to fines and imprisonment.

Labelling Requirements:

Allergen labelling Law covers the following areas:

• The Food name may be a legal, customary or descriptive that meets the regulations. The name must not mislead.
• Full ingredients in descending order of weight (at time of production) QUID (Quantitative Ingredient Declaration)
• Allergens highlighted within the ingredient list
• Additives (the functional class plus the specific name or E-number)
• If the food has been irradiated or modified genetically then this must be declared
• The declaration Font size must meet legal standards.
