Food Allergen Compliance

The new Food Information Regulations 2021 Prepacked for Direct Sale (PPDS) were introduced in October 2021.

It applies to food that is prepared, offered or sold to consumers on the premises as ‘prepacked’.

It can include food a customer selects from a display unit, as well as products from behind the counter or food sold at mobile or temporary outlets.

Restaurants, cafes, schools, colleges and universities, care homes, canteens, delicatessens all businesses that are affected by the PPDS Regulations.

What is required:

The legislation requires all food outlets to provide ‘full ingredients’ lists with clear allergen labelling.

Background to the law:

The PPDS regulations also called ‘Natasha’s Law’ came into effect because of the tragic death of Natasha Laperouse.

Natasha purchased a baguette from a ‘grab and go’ Sandwich Bar that did not declare hidden allergens on the label and as a result she suffered Anaphylactic shock and death.

That matter was taken to a civil claim and Natasha’s parents campaigned to change the law on food supplied as ‘food pre-packaged on site’.
